Characteristics of Variable Multilevel Run-Length-Limited Code
Zhang Long, Ni Guoqiang, and Pei Jing
We present a new variable multilevel run-length-limited modulation coding scheme. By using this coding scheme, better coding efficiency is obtained while the read out channel servo control and the channel signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) are met. Different phase restrictions can be set according to the SNR margin when the different run length is phased: short-run is phased less and long run is phased more. It can use the run-length redundancy to the extreme extent while reducing the inter-code interference of multi level run. Through theoretical analysis and experimental testing, the characteristics of this coding scheme are analyzed, and the performance of this scheme applied to DVD disc is also given through the test. The experimental result shows that the readout signal of the coding scheme has good symmetry with the raw byte error rate less than 1×10-5, and the coding scheme meets the requirements of the readout channel and servo control of DVD system.

Increasing Focal Depth of Near-Field Optical Storage Systems by Five-Zone Amplitude-Phase Hybrid Filter
Fang Chaolong, and Zhang Yaoju
Based on the vector diffraction theory and by using the optimizing toolbox in MATLAB, a five-zone amplitude and phase hybrid filter is designed to increase the focal depth of a near-field solid immersion lens (SIL) optical storage system. In the process of design, the spot intensity is constrained to half of the spot intensity without a filter and the spot size is constrained to equal to the spot size without a filter. When the designed filter is applied in a SIL near-filed optical storage system it improves the focal depth by 1.6 times. At the same times, it effectively restrains the expansion of recorded spot size with the increase from the SIL-air interface.

New Progresses in Inorganic Phase-Change Materials for Information Storage
Sun Huajun, Hou Lisong, Wei Jingsong, and Wu Yiqun
Phase-change chalcogenide alloys GeSbTe and AgInSbTe have been successfully used in rewritable optical discs, and researches in the phase change memory(PCM) device as substitute for flash memory is becoming a hotspot in the field of information storage. Also, new applications of phase-change materials have been developed in the related areas. Latest experimental and theoretical results on the mechanism and improvement in the optical / electrical storage properties, as well as some new applications of phase-change materials are reviewed, and their development trend is prospected.
